Are you a member of Gen Z or a parent of a Gen Z’er? If you are, it is likely that you (or your dear darling) were just beginning your career journey when you were furloughed or let go as the pandemic escalated. Shockingly here are the statistics:
  • Under 25s are more likely to be furloughed than any other age groups
  • Online graduate vacancies fell by 60%

If this is you how do you rise up now as we move forward into Spring?
There are three key points you should focus on developing and honing:

Skill development. This could be very practically watching a task and applying your learning (socially distanced of course!) or through mentoring focused on developing expertise. Some companies offer mentoring schemes but if yours does not it’s time to get creative. If you get stuck, I offer a 30-minute affordable group mastermind once a month on how to get the right mentor for you – sign up on my website www.vttcoaching.co.uk.

Stress management. The Harvard Business Review reported that 18 to 24-year-olds feel that stress and mental health is the biggest challenge they face in relation to success at work. So if this resonates with you you’re not alone. Consider downloading a free mindfulness app or other free resources, coaching will help here if you’re struggling.

Emotional intelligence. What do we mean by emotional intelligence? It is classified by psychologists as consisting of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. It is not a ‘soft skill’ but a critical element of effective leadership. If you’d like to read more on this Daniel Goleman’s books are market-leading.

What if you want to rise up as a leader, especially when you’re not in charge?
What do I mean by leadership you ask? Well, it’s not all about the role. It’s a mindset. It’s the act of getting people to do something that’s in their best interest or in the best interest of others, whether or not you have the authority to command those people to do what you want them to do.

So to rise up as a leader you need to work on your toolkit:
Having the courage to act. You could experiment and take small steps to play with your leadership identity, take on feedback from others and assimilate it, learning what works for you and your team and what does not. Need a practical example?
Be obviously values-driven. An easy exercise to consider this is to look at someone you admire and consider which values they show and how they show them.
Communicate with impact. (tell a great story) – Preparation is key here. TED talk link? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lukeZyNHZzk OR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj-hdQMa3uA
